carnation

suppose we hit a golden spiral
taking us back to 33a.d.
then, the bud of us was no more than a swelling tear
cascading down a woman’s cheek,
metamorphosing red
upon converging with the blistering sand
somewhere north of mount zion

dare i purport that was the birth of us?
before the saviour even breathed his last
and saved us all. or so they say.
the fortunate. believers.

and i’d like to believe in something.
anything at all.

still, mind not that mary wept for us, in our creation,
just keep your wandering eyes on that carnation,
scarlet turning to hot pink in the lewd glare of the sun

under your hands, the buttons of my shirt fumble undone.

Christians believe that the first carnation bloomed on earth when Mary wept for Jesus as he carried his cross.

  1. like it a lot. the mixing of Christianity and Jesus to love and relationships. makes me think of the butterflys wings flapping and causing a hurricane in another part of the world… except of course if Jesus did exist he would be the hurricane and we would be the butterfly.

    sensual!

    • you know, it’s odd that i find myself writing about religion so much because i’m not religious much, if at all. and i guess everything’s related in some way to us – even if it doesnt exist, the notion of it affects us …

      thanks for popping by :)

    Beautiful and thoughtful…

there is religion (organized by man) and there is relationship – why Jesus died. I’ll chose the relationship – not really into rules!

  3. I love the imagery here. It is an odd juxtaposition to compare love and the tear that was shed so long ago, but it works beautifully. Great, powerful poem.

  4. beautiful :)

A hopeful atheist or a doubtful believer, either way feelings humility and a connection to all fellow man. Very nice. :)

  6. sometimes i find myself integrating religious icons because i find there is something spiritual about love, destiny, relationships.. the connection and chasm of life itself.. we feel it all crawl on our skin and through our bones, and grit our teeth much like Christ did before his death.. i find the connections inspiring, lethargic, and surreal in many cases.. for love is, after all, the life and death of us.. we are the creators and the created.. the evil and the blessed.. whether you really believe in it or not, the underlying breath of the bible or koran, the stories and history, are relate-able and powerful. great job with a beautiful sensual twist in the end.
